GENERAL DESCRIPTIONFORMING AND SHAPING PROCESSES
|
Powder compaction is used to shape ceramic and metal parts from powder materials. For several materials like ceramics and
metal-ceramic blends (usually powders), this is the most used and common technology for shaping them. The technology involves the following steps: Sintering is a common technique for consolidating powders. It is essentially a removal of the pores between the starting particles (accompanied by shrinkage of the component), combined with growth and strong bonding between particles. The process is carried out by heating up the "green" part at about 80% of the melting temperature, until full strength is obtained (10 min. to several houres). The biggest problem of this technique is the shrinkage which causes cracking, distortion, etc. There are many methods for sintering a component. The most important are: vapor-phase sintering; solid-state sintering; liquid-phase sintering; reactive liquid sintering. Overpressure sintering uses also pressure to accelerate the densification. |
